Brake Pads and Rotors

Hi,

My (2K2 Maxima) front rotors are completely warped and the sensors are beginning to make noise. The folks at NTB told me the rear rotors/pads still have some life - maybe about 5-10K left on them.

My local garage suggested Raybestors pads and rotors. Others searches on the internet suggested Portefields, Hawks, Brembo's etc.

What seems to be the verdict so far on the Raybestos, Akebono ACT Pads etc....? Do all rotors come zinc plated to prevent rust? How essential is this?

I don't do autocross, though I enjoy spirited driving, freeways, country roads, etc.

I've had good luck with standard Brembo blanks. For pads, get the OEM semi-metallic (I think that's what they have). Not the Key Value junk, either. You may as well get a set for the rear also. Tire Rack has good prices on rotors, and I like Conicelli Nissan for low OEM part prices.

Any rotor plating rubs off quickly. Mostly good for out-of-the-box shine and keeping the rust off that outer edge a little longer (which is harmless). Rotors rust, period.

Then I recommend getting the all-new rotors and good OEM pads. Next time the pads are changed be sure to get the rotors turned or replaced. Since I do brakes myself I have a second set of rotors - I simply swap them and get the other set turned whenever I find time. When you come to a dead stop (say, stopping for a red light from medium-high speed), let the car roll forward a few inches a couple times in the first 20s so that you don't keep one part of the rotor clamped in the pads while the rest cools. Don't know how well it works, but it makes sense.

If the rotors are within the specified repair limit, I would get the turned, no need to replace something if it is not needed.

Also I agree with David G. , Use OEM pads.

Anything else will make noise.

do not throw away the shims on the brake pads reuse them if they are in good shape, if they are rusted and falling apart, replace them as needed.

and go to groups, advanced group search, and search for old postings in this group. As well you can find info at

but there you need to contribute a few bucks to get full use of their search function. Rent/borrow the rear caliper tool from Autozone or buy one. The rear calipers must be rotated as well as compressed. The fronts compress simply with a bigass C-clamp (10"?).
