First, disable airbags by disconnecting positive and negative battery terminals under the hood, and waiting at least 10 minutes before proceeding.

Remove center console: pull up the parking brake handle. Pry up the trim panel surrounding the shift lever. It is retained by clips. Remove the console retaining screws at front and rear of the console. Unplug any electrical connections and remove the console assembly to gain access to the brake assembly.

Adjustment: The lever, when properly adusted, will travel 10 to 11 clicks (1995-2001 models) when moderate force is applied. If less, it may not release completely and pads could drag. If more, the brake may not hold adequately. Loosen or tighten the adjusting nut; clockwise tightens it. The adjusting nut is directly under the base of the brake handle, and is at the end of the cable itself.

All this per Haynes manual; I've never had to do this myself. Haynes strongly emphasized disabling the air bags. All responsibility for any consequences is hereby disclaimed; use this information at your own risk.
