Insurance costs

The majority of content in this newsgroup seems to be from the USA but if there's any UK people here, I'd be interested to hear what you pay for your insurance. I've got a Nissan QX (that's the UK name for the Maxima) 3.0 litre SEL auto, 1997 (R-reg) and I'm currently insured with "More Than" (used to be called Royal & Sun Alliance).

I'm 46 years old and have something like 25 years no claims discount (although the actual years seem to mean nothing - I'm on the 65% maximum NCD that More Than offer) and I've just got my renewal notice for this year. They want £531 (that's approximately $966 USD for our American friends) and I'm rather inclined to tell them to stick it and to go elsewhere - but where?

Thanks in advance,

Mogweed.

I know you only want UK responses, but speaking from Canada, the $966USD insurance figure sounds just about the same as what we're paying here.

I pay about $2200.00 CAD for two drivers on two vehicles. One a 1992 Plymouth Voyageur and the other a 1995 Nissan Maxima. My deductible is $300.00 on each.

I live in Ottawa, Canada. I live on the east side of Bank street and have a number of friends that live on the west side of Bank street. They are paying about 30 to 50 percent more on average than we do in the east. Apparently, the insurance company breaks the city into geographic regions and charges based on the statistical cost of average vehicle claims in the region. Based on this argument, we would generally find that west of Bank Street, housing costs more and people generally drive more expensive cars, so loss costs are higher, this includes thefts as well as accidents. It's not that I live in a poorer section of town so much as the region is smaller and the cost of living less, and generally, there are fewer houses in our area that have a $500,000 price tag or higher. The population density is higher in the west and the cost of housing usually exceeds our side by 20% or more for the same size floor space, as an example, 1800 Square feet in my area is worth around $240,000 and wets of Bank street, the price would be close to $280,000 or more.

So, if you insurance costs are really high, you might be able to reduce them by physically moving.
