Mileage question

Why would I be getting only 19.5/19 mpg on my '02 Maxima when I used to get about 23 mpg?

Could be one or more of a lot of reasons. One of which is the annual changeover to "summer" gas.

Has your usage changed? Have you recently changed where you buy gas? Is the check engine light on? How many miles on it? Have you kept up with recommended maintenance?

Give more info and you might get some educated (as opposed to knee- jerk) suggestions.

First, thanks for your response.

Can you explain what you mean by "summer gas"?

"Has your usage changed?" No

"Have you recently changed where you buy gas?" No

"Is the check engine light on?" No

"How many miles on it?"

73,000

"Have you kept up with recommended maintenance?" Basically.

Is it possible that the dealerships (I've tried 2) aren't interested in maintaining a Max with 75,000 miles and would like to see me think about purchasing a new car? (It also doesn't have that real quiet idle and real smooth ride that it used to...)

That would be it right there. The dealer is unfortunately not really interested in making the car last. It is more about maximizing (Excuse the pun:)) their profits from maintenance activities. Your Maxima has 100K mile spark plugs. So the dealer has not changed them. You may be noticing the effects of spark plugs which are tired and near the end of their life span.

Also, you might need an O2 sensor. They are notorious for getting sluggish without throwing a check engine code. The sluggish behaviour contributes to worse gas mileage, more difficult starts etc. Replace them and its like WOOMF!, new car. This mainly applies to the most active O2 sensor which is in the exhaust manifold. The other O2s play a much less significant role in affecting the car's performance.

never have averaged more than 18 to 19 in town, and 25 to 28 on the road with my 2000 Max, and doesnt the 02 have an even bigger engine?

gas with ethanol in it (summer blend) will reduce your mileage 5 to

10 percent - thats just another reason why turning food into fuel is a super dumb idea.
