Nokian WR tires

Hey everyone,

It's been a while since I've been here. Good to see all of you again. I moved from Oregon this summer to upper lower Michigan (Traverse City area)*. Nice to know some of the regs are still here too (Chris H., NissTech, Buddy Wh) Chris, glad to see you're still a double 3rd Gen-er.

  • Look at your right palm. This is MI. TC is the dip between your pinky and ring finger.

One of the big differences in Michigan is the SNOW!! My 91 SE has some thinning Michelins that were fine in the wetness of the northwest, but suck arse big time here in snow country. I've been using a Ford Exploder this winter, but want to get my Max back on the road and out from under the piles of snow it's been hiding behind (poor guy).

I considered some dedicated snow tires, but they're not cheap, and lose their effectiveness at the tread half-life point (diff compounds). And I'm gonna need new non-snows here shortly too (have maybe one dry season left in the Miche's). Total for both sets will be $750-800+. I called a few places in town, and the tire that kept coming up was the Nokian WR. Money will be tight for a while (going back to school), and these tires run about $500 for the set.

Does anyone have any info or experience with this tire? Everything I've read is extremely positive. It's a year-round tire that also has the Extreme Weather rating (mountain and snowflake symbol). It's H-rated, and will go for 50K miles. Normal all-season tires will work in the snow, but they lean towards dry weather performance. This one seems to lean the other way.

Thanks for the info. It's good to be back. The '91 is still running strong at

163,000 (hoping for 225K+). My Dad was shocked and impressed that it rides better than his '96 Contour (and has far fewer problems - what a POS).
