Removing front shocks - question

I'm taking off the front shock assys to install some polypropylene wire wrap to stop spring squeak. Naturally, this will change my alignment settings. Would making horizontal and vertical match marks across the shock assembly help keep things close enough? Or would it be futile?

I've seen mechanics at a dealership use markings with perfectly good results.

Marks do help a lot. There is always play between components that would alter the alignment. Marks will allow you to put components in basically the same position.

Mark the position of the 3 studs and nuts for the upper strut mount. Mark the position of the strut with respect to the knuckle. I imagine that you will not need to move the lower ball joint or the connecting rod.

Good luck!

Thanks guys. I've done this before and to remove the shock assy you only need to remove the two bolts holding it to the knuckle. I'll bet with the crud / rust on the components a scribe will do mark it nicely.
