405 STi non-starter

Just sold my 405 STi to a mate. Now the starter motor is becoming intermittant.

I thought it was the immobiliser playing up, but it still bump starts. When it works, the starter is 100%, not slow or noisy or anything else, when it doesn't there is no noise under the bonnet, just the relays clicking. No grinding or effort from the starter at all..........

Any ideas please, it's a 1994 405 STi 2 litre

And anyone know where the alarm key switch is? It's not behind the n/s headlight, as the handbook says.

TIA

Hi,

Starter brushes are worn. No idea of the cost, no idea of the job (starter removal, dismantling, brushes changing, cleaning rotor and refitting), shouldn't be too expensive, esp. if it's a Valeo or Bosch unit. May be slightly longer and more expensive if it's a Mitsubishi.

Yes, I agree. Had exactly the same problem with the 405. For about a year I needed to hit the starter motor if it didn't turn over and try again. Then it got worse and worse... In the end got a new starter motor for just over

100 quid.

Solenoid inside the starter is sticking - mine did exactly the same. When it won't start, a sharp tap with a screwdriver-handle or similar will usually get it going.

Just get the starter replaced - an "as-new" unit from your local Motorfactor (look in your Yellow Pages) costs less than £100.

Thanks, but no, starter is fine, there's no power to the solenoid. Apply 12v to the solenoid wire, and it bursts into life. Typically, since I've had the volt-meter near it, it works fine, and has started first time, no problems since Friday.

Bloody cars, wont even breakdown when you want them to.

Then you have a wiring issue. Dodgy earth and/or loose/dirty/corroded connection somewhere ! Remove, clean, tighten, refit everything.

The alarm keyswitch wont be there, It doesnt have one on a STI. Thats only fitted with the ultra sonic battery back up alarm from august

1994, When the 405 got its drivers airbag.

It has the early alarm system, The one with the serious security flaw!

Hi

The pre airbag 405 security flaw involves the location of the alarm / immobiliser box & how easy it is to bypass when armed.

All you need is the 2 correct wires & a paper clip!
