406 2.0 GLX

I have had my PUG for 12 months. I get a strong smell of petrol on an intermittent basis. The smell occurs within the first 15 minutes of the car being started & then dissapears. Any advice would be appreciated. Geoff

Funny. I get the same in my 1995 405 1.8 (petrol). Only when idling (also not moving) and when the engine is cold. I've been suspecting the charcoal cannister system that collects petrol fumes from the tank until the engine is warm enough or revving high enough to pass them on into the intake. Something might be leaking there. Haven't found anything yet, though. A bit of a petrol smell is normal as long as the engine isn't warmed up properly yet: the lambda probe doesn't work until it's hot enough and will prompt the ECU to manufacture a mixture that is too rich. But then the petrol fumes should originate from the exhaust, and not somewhere under the bonnet as in my case, then seeping into the interior through the vents. I guess your smell is strongest inside too? Since nothng else seems to be wrong and it clears up once the engine is at normal running temp, I just ignore it by setting the ventilation to recirculate when waiting @ the lights etc. But if anyone knows a simple cure, please post it! :-)

There was a recall on the two pipes that run across the top of the engine just behind the top cambelt cover. They leaked slightly where they connect to the fuel rail. You're supposed to change the pipes (they come as a set) and the clips, but you could try just fitting new clips.

This is very interesting news! Does it apply to 405's built in 1995? XU

1.8 petrol engine? Any additional info on the recall?

thanks!

Oh God, now you're taxing my memory. The recall only applied to 406 and 306 with the XU7 and XU10 engine, but I seem to remember that there was something on the 405 with the 1800 engine. Don't think it was a recall. Where the fuel inlet pipe went on the fuel rail it was to just change the clip. You should be able to gently move the pipe up and down by the clip and there should be no seepage of fuel (with the engine running of course). But do it GENTLY!!
