Heater plug replacement 97 406 1.9td , DIY job ?

Hi All , With this sudden cold snap my 406 has been hard to start the last couple of mornings , have to keep turning it over with my foot to the floor until it eventually splutters into life. My initial thoughts are heater plugs worn out , is it a DIY job to replace them or are special tools/equipment needed ? . Also , what should I expect to pay for a set of heater plugs ? .

I've not done them on that car, the closest I got was a Xantia. But they cost about £30 a set and no special tools are needed (maybe a box spanner but probably not). Mind you the Xantia (1.9td) was a right bugger to get to all the plugs so I took it to a man who does. I can't vouch for your car though.

On the XUD9T engine, it's quite easy to replace the glow plugs, except for the one which is closest to the injection pump. Fortunately they normally start quite happily on three... :-)

If I remember correctly, you will need a 10mm spanner, a 13mm socket, and quite possibly a magnetic pickup to retrieve the tiny washer you will inevitably drop.

Good luck!

I suspect there's a secret knack to it that only those enrolled in the inner circles of car maintenance know. There's a garage I used to use in Gloucester (closed now) who would supply and fit a complete set of plugs for the Xant 1.9TD for about £50. It only seemed to take them about half an hour too. I couldn't even get close to the plug by the pump.
