Re: not many
which is very good on diesel .the 405 was getting a bit lazy at picking up speed
, should of fitted a turbo if the engine would of taken it lol.
Well I still have a petrol 405 estate 1995 which is generally going fine
At the last MOT, the tester was a bit grumpy about 'play in the steering
column' Not the joints or along the axis of the steering column but with
a good sideways or up and down tug, there is a little play and that is
what he was not happy about.
Beacuse it is written down on the computer system, wherever I take it
next time will be alerted to the problem.
I've not had a look yet but does anyone know if there adjustments I will
be able to make? or what the solution is likely to be?
It still drives fine but I've a feeling I will have to do something
about before the next test.

Re: not many
Half way down you have nylon cups and they fit round the steering column it
might just a case that they need replaceing,or the top one need to be
replaced, its a easy job todo.or he could of just had a bad day .

I'll put it on the round-2-it list

Re: not many
I dropped in to the pug dealer hoping to grab a look on his computer at
a diagram of the steering column.
There are no replaceable parts like bushes he said. That will be a whole
new top half steering column for £240 plus vat !!!!!!!!
I'll take it to pieces and see if I can make some busjes to sort it out.
I did find one useful thing though:-
When you take a vehicle for an MOT test, the tester cannot look up the
details of any advisory points that were made on the previous tests.

Re: not many
I started the strip down today and with the plastic cover off I could
see that if the movement felt at the steering wheel was projected to the
UJ in the column it would be moving a huge amount. I concluded the
steering wheel must be loose but could not believe it.
However with the airbag removed, I could see the wheel move and yet the
nut stayed still!!
It only took a 1/4 turn to tighten and the nylock nut looked & felt
perfect so I can only assume it was not fully tightened at the factory
and over the years (16 ish) it had fretted a bit until it became loose.
I did remove the wheel completely to check the splines and they were fine.
Turned out to be a trivial job apart from the nut appearing to be 7/16
whitworth, the same as the sump drain plug whereas everything else on
the car has been metric. 22mm too loose, 19mm no way
Also noticed the airbag controller is made by Saab.
That brought that problem to a close.
