Pug 205 GTI 1.9 / Citroen BX GTI 8v Clutch / Starter Motor

A couple of quick questions:

  1. Will the starter motor from a 205 GTI 1.9 (G reg I think) be the same as a BX GTI 8v (H reg) ?

  1. Will the clutch from the same 205 be the same as the one in the BX? And don't tell me I'm mad even considering this - I know.

You're not mad, they should be. They're both XU engines and are pretty much identical. I think the 205 has a different air intake system, but that's about it.

Hi,

Not only. The BX GTi (at least the model we had in France) had a XU9J2 (same as the Mk1 405 SRi), so 125HP @ 5500RPM when the 205 had the XU9JA (130HP @

6000 ? Not sure about revs). Perhaps the clutch will be the same. It may also depend on the gearbox type (BE1 or BE3).

Evening Peter, fancy seeing you round here! Starter motor is definately the same. And the clutch will almost certainly be the same. A lot of the engine/drivetrain will be interchangeable between the 2 cars.

Cheers Carl. One more question then, how long is it likely to take 2 reasonably mechanically aware people to do the whole job - take apart the

205 to get the clutch off, put it back together enough so it rolls, then put said clutch into the BX?? We'll have a fair amount of tools, and 2 trolley jacks (or more) between us.

why on earth would you use a used clutch, the plate is not that expensive and a new presuse group is almost certainly nesserary and.. do they both have a BE1 or a BE3 gearbox? because a BE1 clutch wont fit in a BE3 box

ik takes three hours to replace a clutch, so lets say six in total.

The used clutch was blatant penny pinching on my part, and like you say the pressure plate (is that what you're referring to?) would ideally be replaced anyway, so £60 or so for a clutch kit would be a good idea, and save messing about with an old 205. Regarding the gearbox types - that was exactly the reason for my post - to find out whether it would fit anyway.

That's my other reason for asking - phoned up a local Citroen specialist who told me that the clutch was an 8 hour job!!

As other people said the gearboxed may be different. But, i think i'm right in saying, that if reverse is in the same place on both cars (either back and right for the latter ones, or up and left for the earlier ones), then they're the same gearbox. Even if they're not you may well find they'll fit.

I've manged to do a 205 clutch in an afternoon when i didnt really know what i was doing, by myself, so you should be able to knock it all off in a day pretty easily. Incidentally whats happening to the 205 when you've finished with it...?

Also, one little tip, if the GTi gearboxes are anything like my old XS box make sure you have some Torx sockets, otherwise you'll be going nowhere!

Dunno, but I'm sure he'd be happy to sell it, or some parts off it, if you wanted anything. Anything specific you're after?

Ah yes, got loads of them now. After having bought an expensive socket rail of about 6 1/2" drive ones ages ago from halfords and subsequently lost most of them, I spent about £16 on a decent draper set of hex/spline/torx bits - not socket bits but the hex-type ones with socket adapters, that come in two lengths. Bloody good set!

Nothing to major, just bits of the dashboard, possibly the front indicators depending what age it is. If you fancy getting rid of a few bits and pieces let me know, i'm sure we can com to some sort of deaal!

Good stuff. I had a set too till someone borowed them (read: stole them!!!)

Hi Marc,

It will almost fit. Only the clutch bearing will be different and is specific to BE model. I discovered that after my brother had the clutch replaced on his '91 205 DTurbo (should be a BE3, so the mechanic with the VIN ordered the parts), which has a BE1, indeed (second hand engine, originally from a BX TD according to what I've seen (belt-driven vaccum pump, and BE1, which shows it's a pre-07/90 engine)), so he had to order (and fit) another bearing.
