rear windscreen exploded on my 206 !!!

really - i parked my car up today, temperature was around 10 degrees with some slight sunshine (rear screen facing the sun). there and then a massive bang! i had fully comp so i had to fork out 50 quid for a replacement. that wouldnt be so bad except that i've now got loads of scratches all over the ex-mint paintwork.

the 206 rear screen is quite curvy. i can only imagine that some fault in its manufacturing prevented it from taking tension at whatever temperature fluctuation. its under warranty but my only chance in persuading peugeot to pay out for the fault would be to leave it with them to examine - and i just dont have time for that. besides they would probably call me back and tell me that somebody had thrown a stone or something.

i noticed that the edges of the rear screen had more damage (i.e. shattered off and landed over a metre away) than the centre - almost like the screen was trying to straighten itself!!!!!! - spooooky!!!

i've really been disheartened with my 206 - it grinds like a food processor around corners, the indicators dont always work (and when they do, they switch off quickly before i go around the corners) my gears never seem to go in without a crunch and my interior + seat cloth is in a worser condition than one you'd find in a cortina mark

  1. not to mention a constant noise whilst driving (like i'm towing a lump of metal without a trailer).

a reminder for myself, for the future i guess - all that glitters sure aint gold!

my 307SW tinted rear screen did similar (about 4 months old at the time), except I was moving, on motorway at time, I suppose it could just have been stone, all I heard was the explosion of it which was very loud, and since in rear not obvious what has happend for a few seconds - Snipers ? not on the M4 surely.

I did once see a question on here from someone with similar, enquiring about some 'tension relieving pins' not being fitted, but no further infor was forthcoming ?

maybe - but seems unusual for a stone to hit the rear screen - especially with enough impact to break the screen. the glass on my exploding rear windscreen appeared to be quite thick. on my car, the top and side edges broke off and scattered but the lower edge was perfectly intact (where the rear washwipe sits). other than the washwipe the only thing holding the screen to the car was the resin -i couldnt find any pins or clips anywhere.

i suppose it could have been worse - i could have had passengers/kids at the back or it could have happened to the front screen.

Not sure if it's the same, but my sister-in-law's saxo rear screen went when they closed the boot one day. When the window company came to replace it, they said it was a common fault if the wiper motor is a bit loose, as the wiper goes through the screen,

Hi,

It also happened on one of my parents' company car, an AX, when running down a bad road. The fact is, on the AX, the rear windscreen is the "connection" between the roof & the hatchback, this involving it's a part of body flex. If the body flexes a bit too much, it can seize the glass & explode it. I wonder if it ain't the same kind of problem on the 206.
