Sat Nav Question

A friend has a much newer 406 than my old bus and he has the Sat Nav installation (mine doesn't even have a compass or a sextant). Recently his has developed an intermittent problem which is displayed as "Error reading drive....". On computers this usually translates as "the disk is knackered" or "the drive is knackered". He has tried substituting a known good disk which again worked sometimes and gave the error on others. Peugeot agent quoted £800 for a repair without actually looking at it. I was wondering whether the CD ROM drive is, in fact, similar to that on a computer and thus could be replaced with a standard unit. Also I would like to know where it is housed on the car which is an estate model (I have not seen it) and how easy is it both to get at and to repair/replace.

Any other advice would be welcome.
