Warm Starting Problems With A Diesel!

I have recently bought a 1989 Peugeot 405TD Estate (1769cc)which has developed this fault which I have never encountered beforein a diesel:-

It starts fine when cold but if you turn the engine off and try to restart it the starter turns but the engine won't start.

Sounds like fuel starvation to me but bleeding the system has no effect.

Tried running a live feed from the battery to the fuel cut off solenoid but this had no effect either.

I can't really think what else to try. Has anyone got any ideas? Could it be the Cold Start or Injector Pump?

Hi,

If you are fairly sure it is fuel starvation then it could be a blocked fuel tank vent (a problem I had on my 205 TD). When the engine is cold (i.e. hasn't run then enough air has leaked into the tank through via the filler cap not fitting perfectly. Once the car is running it is creating a vacuum in the tank to the point when you stop and try to restart the fuel pump hasn't got the umph to "suck" diesel out of the tank. Temporary fix for me was to open the fuel filler before starting again. Permanent fix was to clear the blocked tube and non-return air valve located near the mouth of the fuel filler (under the rear wing on the 205).

Just a possibility....

It could also be the stop solenoid sticking in the closed position when it is hot. My 405 td was always more hesitant to start when hot, but I changed the solenoid at one point as it leaked, and it made no difference to me. It was also suggested that the rubber priming bulb could leak back, causing a fuel starvation, but I changed this too, to no avail. Valve clearances were also OK. You make it sound as if yours will not start at all when hot though. Brian.

Thanks both of you for good advice. But Brian you win, it was the fuel stop solenoid. Took it out and now it is sorted!
