NY Times October 20, 1955

The 1956 Pontiac cars have a new type of automatic transmission designed to provide smoother, quieter gear-shifting and more efficient use of power. The line was announced yesterday by the Pontiac division of the General Motors Corporation. Models will go on display in dealer showrooms here tomorrow, when city delivered prices will be announced. The transmission, known as Strato-Flight-Hydra Matic, uses a new coupling system that in gear-shifting is said to provide a more efficient, uninterrupted flow of power from engine to rear wheels. Engine power has been increased from 180 to 205 horsepower in the 860 and 870 series, and from 180 to 227 in the Star Chief series

- Fifteen models include six hardtop Catalinas. Three of the latter are four-door and three are two-door units. The overall length of the Star Chief series has been increased from 210.3 inches in 1955 models to 212.7 inches. In the 860 and 870 series it has gone up from 203.2 inches to 205.6 inches. Because of the increased demand fro station wagons, the 1956 production schedule for those units is set at 80,000 against 37,500 in 1955. There are four station wagons in the line. Front-end styling with wrap-around bumpers is similar in all cars. Front seats have been redesigned for more comfort and head room. There is a choice of fifty-seven two-tone or solid colors. ========== Pontiacs of the 1950s:
