1986 Grand Prix problems...

Hi all,

I've not been in here in a while, but I feel the need to ask for some assistance with my troubles.

My '86 Grand Prix, V8, 305 has been fairly hard to start on most mornings when I fire it up to go to work. It used to almost always do this, then I would have to use something to hold the butterfly on the carb open and it would start fine. I believe it has an electric choke on it and I am guessing that it is sticking or something. I have not had to 'prop' the carb open to start it for a while, but it is still quite hard to start most mornings. Though some mornings it fires up first shot. It also runs kinda sluggish until it warms up. Almost seems like one dead cylinder, but I've checked for spark at all plugs and all seems fine. Once hot, it seems to be a lot more responsive to the accelerator pedal, but when cool, it almost wants to stall (and has a couple of times) when I go to accelerate from a light or stop sign etc. Today I was sure I could smell antifreeze burning, and a blown head gasket is all I can think of. Coolant looks normal, but oil seems to look a bit brownish. Not sure what this all means but I am sure I will get some helpful tips in here as I have many times before.

Thanks all, Duane
