1990 Sunbird steering issue (leans right, steering wheel jerks around a bit)

Hi, My 1990 Pontiac Sunbird now constantly steers itself to the right, in such a way that I must hold the steering wheel slightly to the left to go straight. (It's not drastic or anything, just worrisome. ) Also, when I'm driving under 30 mph or so the steering wheel jerks back and forth a little, and I suspect the jerking is a little worse when I turn left.

Does anyone have any guess whatsoever as to what the problem is? I'm completely car-ignorant, so "obvious" observations or pointers to basic car-repair info (or Sunbird info) would also be great.

Thanks,

Jay

Good guess! (I think.) I just took it on the freeway ('cause I'm stupid, I'm told) to go to another city's library to get a book on car repair. On the way back (on the freeway) it started vibrating a lot more than usual, then suddenly my car sounded like a helicopter. I pulled over to the emergency lane to find that I had a flat tire.

After walking a mile to a payphone, getting it towed to the mechanic's*, and arriving home, I find your response. If I had only waited!

Thanks,

Jay

  • I didn't realize I had a flat tire 'til the tow truck arrived.
