1991 Grand Prix Repair Notes

Offered for those with similar problems.

Problem One:

Car would start, run fine cold, then go to running temperature and die on idle.

Solution:

Shop replaced MAP sensor and MAP sensor harness.

Had to let idle "relearn" for about a day and a half.

Now idles correctly.

Problem Two (Not Quite Solved)

Before the MAP sensor was replaced, serveral of the idiot lights would be on almost always and the Service Engine Light.

The Service Engine light indicated that the engine codes had to be read, and that's what lead to exchanging the MAP sensor and MAP sensor harness.

Now, the problem is: car will occasionally shut down while idling, and cannot be immediately restarted. It will basically play dead for a few minutes, and then start up normally like nothing happened. It will, however, have reset my clock and radio presets.

Another sympton is that while the Service Engine light no longer comes on, the gas and temperature lights come on (the temperature gauge indicates normal running temperature)...but if I run for a while, those two lights go out.

My guess:

The problem of shutdown occurs typically when it's especially cold, and I've been running all the electrical ( lights, radio, heater, redefrost ), and the car has been stuck in traffic (lots of low rev idling). I think there is a point at which the electrical system becomes underpowered for all the features in the car. The battery drops under a certain voltage and the computer -- which is voltage sensitive

-- hits critical and goes down. You'll see this will a PC, when there are brown outs -- it's all or nothing. Voltage drops and computer immediate shuts down (or reboots).

I did have the electrical checked, and was told it was "ok" but I don't think the mechanics checked under fully loaded conditions.

My solutions are to not use the radio (which is a factory model, but with a big amp and base.

I think I might also look into a new battery, one that has better performance in cold weather starting and running.

I might also get rid of the factory radio and replace it with a newer, more power efficient model.
