1997 pontiac sunfire problem

i have a 97 sunfire 2.2 that is filling up the coolant tank and blowing it out. i thought head gasket bad ,but have good compression,no coolant in oil and no coolant getting into the cylinders. there is a 3/4 hose that goes into the coolant tank and the other end into the lower radiator hose. i have wondered if a clogged radiator would force coolant into the coolant tank .this car has the thermostat at the waterpump ,so i am guessing it pumps hot coolant to the lower radiator hose. any comments on this problem would be very helpful. lucas

Thanks for the info. Do you think it was factory?

this was the 3rd head gasket, i think whoever did the 2nd gasket broke the bolt. the head bolts need to be replaced each time according to motor manual. i shaved the head, put new valve stem seals in reassembled with all new hoses,t-stat . got it running . then on to the leaking ac / put a dose of die in it,charged and found one of the long bolts that holds the compressor together was leaking at the bolt head.also the high pressure switch needed snugging.i snugged them up and wallla ...it held a 30hg vacume for 5 hours.recharged ... crossing my fingers on that. the thing about the head gasket was,it wouldnt act up at all just sitting idling or reving, but drive it and get it on a long hill and pooosh,,,water out the coolant tank.car had been to 2 chevy dealers and they said there was no problem.i understand why, i took a chance on pulling the head. i found the secret to working on this engine is to remove the top motor mount right at the front of the head. then with a floorjack under the oil pan,the engine could be rocked forward to easily access the intake bolts.once i rocked it i used a chain to hold it forward. lucas
