1998 Pontiac Transport\ Cheyenne

My wife's '98 transport gave up the ghost over the weekend when she was driving to work. Upper end has knocking in it. Mechanics said that 3.4 was notorious for upper end valve problems and that the best thing to do was to swap the engine. Engine only has about 70,000 miles on it. Anyone else had any experience with this problem? Also, anyone know the difference between the Cheyenne and the rest of them?
