2000 GP GT can't move gear shift....

66K mi. This just started yesterday. What and where is the switch that controls this? I have to use the bypass on the gearshift to get the button to push in and I can't get the ignition turned all the way off to get my key out.

This may sound dumb but check to see if you have a bad fuse on your tail lights as you have to press the brake to take it out of park.

Tial lights work, but I have a bulb burnt out in the 3rd brake light. I'll change that for starters.

I have the same car and would like to know that why would a burnt tail-light has anything to do with the shifter?

the problem is your shifter actuactor located in the console beside the shifter when you push the brake you should hear a click each time you push the brake the clicking should come from the center console

I know there is a shift actuator that activates when I press the brake pedal. It should not have anything to do with rear brake light! The initial post seems to think so. That is why I want to clarify it for myself since we have the same car.

Sorry, I read your post and just want to learn along the way. I am curious as to why of if there is a connection to brake light bulbs. I never had to repair mine. If I have to guess, I would check the switch above the brake pedal then the console actuator that lock the stick shift.

No problem. I didn't think to check the switch above the brake pedal, duh. My 87 escort had the same problem now that I think about it. THANKS.
