2001 GrandPrix fuel gage

was wondering, my 01 grandprix GT?s fuel gage started going crazy, went to empty now stuck on full, goes to 3/4 back to full, car has 50k miles on it, what could be the problem, any suggestions on how to fix or what to check would be appreciated, thanks mike :?:

If you bought the car used, the first owner could have replaced the tank. or maybe you replaced it

I'd suggest the in-tank sending unit as a likely suspect. Use a DMM to diagnose. Service manual will give you the proper resistance values for different fuel levels. Had a problem here a couple of years back when large numbers of GM gas gauges suddenly got flakey. Some folks resorted to the odometer as their 'time to fill-up' indicator.

GM blamed the oil company for allowing elemental sulphur in their fuel. Gas company blamed GM for using silver plated contacts on their sending units. So it goes .

Hey, if you ever find out how to get that gage fixed, let me know. I have a 99? Grand Prix with the same problem. I just use my trip computer to go off how much gas I have. Thanks
