96 Trans sport SE problem.

Hi. I've posted several times here and I get pretty good answers.

So, I have the 3.8L automatic. The problem is: By default, the automatic tranny of this van shifts into overdrive at about

45-50 mph. Once in overdrive, if I press on the gas (not a lot to downshift, but not that little) the van sort of vibrates, or rumbles amazingly. It also happened in 4th gear. It doesn't slip and if I give it enough gas, it goes back to 4th gear. I don't want to think is a tranny problem, because now is not the best time to me to spend a lot of money. I have been told it might be related to the fuel, maybe it needs more fuel. Might it be starving for fuel. Fuel filter? Before this, I had a very rough idle, and the mechanic replaced every little hose attached to the very confusing throttle body and surrounding areas. Then, bye rough idle. Now, I see nothing rare underneath that "plastic" hood. Thanx for any comment.

How do you determine it is the MAF sensor? Can I disconnect my MAF sensor just to perform a drive test to see the problem would go away. I understand the computer need a feedback from MAF sensor in order to control other fuel air mixture but it should have a default setting that is not fuel efficient but just for testing purpose.

If it is the MAF it will go over rich or over lean (usually rich) under sustained load, tripping the check engine light with a code indicating something like adaptive limit reached, or some nebulous thing like that. Mine tripped in about 30Km of towing my trailer. With datastreamiong on a monitor, you dould find the MAF reading fluctuating under light cruise (where the "hesitation" occurs. I didn't have my scanner when mine acted up, so I chased down a used MAF and switched it to prove it was the problem. I figured if it fixed the problem, I knew it was the MAF. If it didn't, either it wasn't the MAF or the used MAF was shot too. Fixed it. Some day I want to put the bad one back on and check with the scanner to see how it shows up, for sure.
