ABS module...shouldnt fail because of mileage

I have a 2000 Montana mini van with approx 95,000 km (58,000 mi). Two weeks ago the ABS light came on and stayed on. The GM dealer was unavailable over the Christmas holidays so I took it a local shop. After doing the diag. he said the module need to be replaced and I should go to the dealer for the work. He estimated the price to be around $1000 Canadian :( :( . I have made an appt with the Pontiac dealership where I bought the car. Of course the car's warranty has expired. I am so frustrated with the number of costly repairs that this car has gone through....late last summer it was an expensive transmission problem (I think a solenoid). I am so hoping the dealership will meet me partway. If it does I will buy again from them. If not they will lose my business for a future purchase and the associated service.

Our family is accustomed to having reliable cars lasting longer than 10 years (14 year old Corolla and currently a 12 year old Eagle Summit Wagon).

Just 'talking' out loud.

Make sure the 3rd brake light is working....if that bulb blows..the ABS light will come on and stay on. It did on my 95 bird and my daughters 94 camaro. Replaced the bulb ,system works fine now.

Hope this works for ya .........Stan

An update: I took the car to the dealership today. It isnt the module but rather the sensor in one of the front tires. The service rep says that the whole hub must be replaced as one cant replace the sensor without doing the hub. Still very expensive.

I want to thank BAD 4 GOOD for his posting about the 3rd brakelight bulb being burnt out. I was about to replace the costly abs brake module/pump and read his post. Sure enough the 3rd brakelight bulb was the culprit. BTW, not only was the ASS INOP light on, the cruise control would not function either. I replaced the bulbs and viola! the problem ABS light was out and the cruise works perfectly. Thanks again BAD 4 GOOD.
