ABS Warning Light in 97 Grand Am

I have a 1997 V6 Grand Am with anti-lock brakes and enhanced traction system. Sometimes after starting the car, the ABS warning light stays on. I do what the manual says, which is to turn the ignition off and restart the car to reset the system, and after doing that, the ABS warning light does go off and stays off. The warning light will stay on after starting about once every 75-80 starts, and always goes out and stays off after following the reset instruction. Is this anything to worry about?

There's been no problems with brake performance. Brake fluid level is normal and tires are properly inflated. Car has 75,000 miles.

I can't tell you to worry or not about yours but my 92 does the same thing and I don't worry about it.

My 94 TransSport dit it for quite some time - then it started coming on more often, and at the same time I started hearing a bearing noise. When I pulled the front bearing to replace it, there was rust around the speed sensor assembly (part of the bearing). After replacing the bearing, the ABS light problem went away.

YMMV

My '97 GA only does it after starting - it never comes on while it's being driven. If it did, I'd be taking it to the shop just to make sure ... but I have no idea if needing to be reset is no big deal (after all, resetting instructions are in the manual) or what.

My last Pontiac was an '86 6000LE - very few warning lights on it!

It could also be a short in the wireing. Sometimes if there is a short the light will come one and stay on despite anything you do. Whatever you do don't take it to the mechanic if the brakes are fine. They will charge you an arm and a leg to fix the wire.
