chev v pontiac

Can someone please tell me how to tell the difference between a pontiac 400 and a chev 400 and also is there any easy way of checking that the 68 / 400 firebird Im looking to buy is a 400 and not a 350. Thanks wayne.

Pontiac and Chevy don't look the same, once you spot some key differences... Maybe the easiest thing to look for is the water pump - if it has 4 bolts holding the whole thing on, it's a chevy. The unique thing with Pontiac engines is a long, thin bolt that holds the pump up against the intake manifold. If it doesn't have that, it isn't a Pontiac.

Eyeballing the difference between the various sizes of Pontiac engines is impossible. They're all the same size externally. you need the codes stamped in the block (there's a boss on the passenger side of the block with a 2 letter code on it). Once you have the code, google to find a website with the lists. You'll find that different years used the same code, so you'll also have to read those sites to find where that info is.

Good luck!

Good advice in both responses. I think the easiest thing to recognize about a chevy is that sheet metal timing cover. None of the other GM divisions used a water pump mounted off the timing cover like that..
