Engine Codes 400 XX

I dropped the 1 & 2 rods out the bottom of my 1967 GTO on the on ramp in Waco Texas at about 45 mph in hard rain, now all gto owners know I sure was not heavy into the throttle when it let go because I was not going sideways in the standing water. Dumb kid stole car 2 weeks before and was outruning State crown vic at 138mph until he found you can't out run motorola and 2nd state car boxed him from the front. I will guess he strained it a little too much. I about crapped when my cell phone rang and SPD asked do you know where your green convertable is?

I look all over for a long block in south texas and could not find one. I winter in tx and summer in Mn so I bought a long block in Minnesota to take down next week and have rebuilt, but I am not really sure what 400 I bought. Here is what I can read on the block: Date code is H247 Aug 24 1967 I think, but the casting no is 481988 my docs say 1971 72 or 1973 400. It has 400 on side of block where it should and has three freeze plugs.

The motor unit number is stamped not cast PWH on left front below head Only WH I find is 1969 345 HP. The cast engine code is XX which looks like a 325 hp 400 in 1967 but the casting number should be 9786133 by my books.

The heads are 6X and manifold is 9779088.

My questions 1. does anyone really know what 400 I will be rebuilding, 2. what valves are in 6X is it 2.11/1.77 or 1.92/1.64, 3. is the 979088 manifold the low restriction cast, 4. what cam/pistons would you use if you don't need 10.5 knock with 91 octane fuel. Its just my fun driver on the curves on the way up to the lake on the fun Wi back roads and has not seen a

1/4 mile in a loooong time.

pontiacpower.org has had some good info but until I put a wrench on it I can only make swag's. you can email me at snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com if you have any good thoughts.

  1. The well-known PWH is a 1979 (leftover 1978) 400, of which about 8000 were saved and put in Trans Ams and a few Formulas. As far as I know, that's the only 400 with a 3 digit code. The 6X heads would certainly be original in that case, and the date code, however early, could also match (talking
1977). If this is correct, you'd have late model motor mount holes. You couldn't miss that. Pete McCarthy's book shows that casting number 481988 was used through 75. I personally have not seen a block with that number cast so late, but I have seen lots of 500557, which is also a 75 casting. So I'm skeptical, but it migh be possible it's a PWH. Anyway, 2) the 6X is 2.11/1.66. 3) I can't figure it out.

Joe thanks I must be suffering from frozen brain here in Mn. I did not think that H247 was actually Aug 24 1977 that makes the casting number heads and manifold look much better.

Now I just have to decide on what to put in the block so I can run "normal

90 octane" fuel. Thanks again.

FYI, the 77-79 400 blocks are thin wall cast and cheapened up in other ways too. GM also removed the motor mount bosses for 1969 and older motor mount setup. That will cause problems installing into your '67 GTO.

I think so too, that it will not actually bolt in. It's got a really odd casting number for such a late block, so we might be wrong.

Dons, if you're still wondering what year the block is, you should check the bolt hole for the motor mounts. If it doesn't have 2 bolts per side, it's not a '67.

The 6X heads, PWH and casting # 481988XX is a dead giveaway for a 1979 400 leftover from '78. Stock it was good for 220hp and 8.1:1 compression.

6X heads were used from around '76 thru "79 and all of them have 2.11/1.66 valves. A basic rebuild would give you a strong runner. A good intake and cam would make it more fun. If it needs boring, go 30 over and use something like a TRW L2262F piston. That's what I've got in my 400 and it keeps the compression near stock with the 6X heads. (and don't cost a fortune)

You will need motor mount adapters to bolt it into your Goat. There is a company that sells adapters for the mounts. I can't remember who it is right now, but it's one of the big "clasic Industries" or "year one" type places. They have an adapter to go from the early style mount to the later, and vice versa.
