first post here!

hello all you pontiac freaks. I have a 88 gran prix that needs a new engine, head gasket problems. do i take the heads to the machine shop or just get a new long block at the boneyard? ran good till it got REALLY hot in a bad spot, i think the water pump went out. yes the oil is kinda brown now:}

gotta get this going for my 16 yr old kid to use for a car.

thanks in advance for any advice, smartass comments, laughing, whatever.

Usually it's the intake gaskets that fail on the 60 degree engines. Are you sure it's head gasket problems? The bottom end is ok but when the gaskets fail, they sometimes let coolant into the oil. Wipes out bearings, journals, and other friction surfaces.

I'd recommend doing a wet/dry compression test before spending any money. I've seen some of those 2.8 engines running after 300,000 miles. I've seen others that were ragged peices of shit after 2000. LOL If the car in general is ok, (body, interior, brakes, suspension) a little work would be worth it for someones first car. If you aren't sure what I mean by wet/dry compression test either post or email me.

I thought that was almost exclusive to the 3.8 engine?

Different type of engine and failure. The 3.8 intake warps around the egr tube. The 60 engines just don't seal good.

Well actually it melts, not warps around the egr pipe.
