Head Gasket on Grand Am Quad

Well I have tried everything I could to eliminate an overheating problem on my 95 Grand Am Quad 4, but it still overheats, so I have no choice but to let the garage take the head off and see if it is a cracked head or a head gasket problem. My question is this. If the head or head gasket is the problem and it is replaced/repaired, how likely am I to have the same problem again. Is this something that will keep happening over and over again without a fix, or should I expect it to last quite a while, provided it is maintained properly ? Other than the overheating, the car runs pretty smooth, and it has 250,000 KM or about 155,000 miles approx. Can I expect to get another 2 years out of this car ? I do have a warranty on the powertrain so it would cover the cracked head if that was the case, but it will not cover the gasket. Anyone know if the head or the gasket is more likely to be the probable cause ? I have heard that the heads on these things are waffer thin and crack under heat. Any chance it could be the head, and the gasket would be fine, or does replacing the head require a new gasket as well ?

Thanks for any repsonses.

Regards, KDawg

In general, blown gaskets are more common than cracked heads. The likely cause of either is a one time bad overheat of the engine. That's usually from a coolant leak or fan that didn't operate on time. You DO need a new head gasket every time the head is removed. GW

Dont have ohc heads surfaced if it is warped past a certain point. It should be heated up, torqued to a steal plate, heated up again and allowed to cool slowly. (or something to that effect) If its just machined the cam bores will still off and it will never run right.
