Program key fob

My wife managed to lose the keys to her Aztek - the expensive kind, fob and all. We've bought a new key ($37!) and we've ordered the remote (another $37!). As if that wasn't bad enough, they want another $40 to program the stupid thing. Is there any way to do this myself? I still have the other keyless entry remote.

Thanks, PK

There should be directions in the manual on how to do it. But if there's not go here :

Cool! I *thought* it was a big scam for the dealer - that'll take all of about 2 minutes.

Thanks! PK

Very true (that it will take about 2 minutes), but why does this mean that the dealer is scamming you? You lost the remote, programming takes some time to do, and dealers are not in the business of being charitable. You could just go buy the service manual for your vehicle and you would find those exact instructions in it. You own the vehicle, take the responsibility that comes along with owning a newer vehicle.

You aren't always simply being charged for time spent. You are being charged for knowledge, availability of the service manuals.. etc. Plus, most dealers that I've worked at have a minimum of

1/2 hr charge for just about anything other then wiper blades (free) and/or most light bulbs (.2 hrs). Believe it or not, these are businesses in business to make money, not scan for codes and program key fobs for free all day long.

Plus, if you run it through a shop, by the time the tech is dispatched the work, finds the keys, finds the vehicle, drags it into the bay, runs around to find a scan tool....writes his story....etc....quite often more then "two" minutes has gone by.

But I realize that you aren't interested in the shop sob story....you just want it done for "free"....right?

No, not "free." 1/30th of an hour, hourly rate ~$60, that comes to 2 bucks. I don't expect it for that - I would expect 10 or 15 bucks,
