Purge Valve?

I recently had our 2000 GTP at the local dealer due to a SES light on. A code of PO440 related to the EVAP system? was stored. The problem was traced to a small leak at the fuel cap and a small leak at the purge valve, both of which were replaced. Can someone shed some light, in laymen's terms, as to what was actually occurring to prompt the code and what the purge valve does and where it is located?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

When gasoline sloshes around in the tank, it creates a lot of fuel vapor. To keep the EPA happy that vapor must be contained. That's the EVAP system. Under very specific conditions, the PCM will signal the purge valve to let the excess vapor be sucked into and burned by the engine. Not sure exactly where it is but if you are familiar with the old style "carbon canister" (looks like a black coffee can) you could find it.
