Radio/clock display

I have a '96 Bonneville SSE and the radio works but the clock and the radio stations do not show up in the display area. The car dealer said that the radio would need to be replaced, which I did once and it worked for about

2 yrs but then went out again. When the sun shines in the back window and hits the radio/clock display area the time and channels are visible so it still works but it just isn't lit up. Is there a fuse or bulb that might just need changed or do I really need to get a new radio? I've checked the owners manual and have tried different fuses but don't seem to have any luck. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thank you!!

its a bulb, which gm doesn't sell, goto a parts store and buy a small 12v bulb (#74 is my preference) take apart the radio and solder it in, $2 fix

(I have a similar problem with '99 Montana) ...

Just to clarify ... I'm assuming the display is digital... so the digital display actually uses a bulb behind the scenes? I would have thought it was a LED of sorts... ?

Power usage. Most of those types of displays are edgelit or backlit LCD.

Okay... even these red-light displays in the pontiacs? (yes, I have a hard time believing they are back-lit, but if that's the group's input then I'll shut up and believe it ... others have obviously been there and I haven't :)

Thanks

My wife has a 00 Grand Am and it is the same, I took it to a radio shop and they said they could fix it... The main thing is labor, the part is only $4, but labor is over an hours work to change it...$79. plus parts.....Sorry the radio works just great without the display....

If it looks like a LED, it may be an LED. Same for LCD, florescent, plasma, EL, FED, OLED, CCFL, EEFL, & HCFL. Tbey all have their own distinctive appearance. The display in my Grand Am is CCFL. The displays in my recent GM rental cars have been mostly LCD or CCFL.
