The 54 dollars a piece sounds like a parts america over the counter price. Struts are very dangerous to change without the proper compressing tool. Mine cost over $400.00. After many years in the auto repair business i learned that the strut bearings must be changed at the same time as they are usually worn.It will save having to do the job a second time. also the rubber dust boots should be changed at the same time ,as if they are torn or oil soaked the dirt will get into the new struts and shorten the life very quickly. I would`nt worry about replacing the coil springs unless they are broken , weak or severly rusted. However ,when it is apart is the time to replace ALL questionable parts, as it will cost a lot more to do the job a second time! You cant blame youre mechanic for wanting to do it right the first time,as he would rather not have you back as an unhappy customer.
