Replacing a AC compressor for a 97 Pontiac Transport

I have a 97 Pontiac Transport with 122K miles on it. I am having problems with the AC. The Van had the freon refilled twice in the past

6 weeks. This past weekend I took it to a different repair shop, and they told me the compressor is cracked. In order to replace it, the whole AC unit will need to be replaced as well. Their reasoning was that, that is because of the way the AC unit is setup on this van. I am strongly doubting what they are saying. Does anyone out there know if there is any validity to this?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Your description of their technical analysis isn't technical enougn to pass judgement. I can say that the condensor is a garbage trap for the crap flying out of a fried compressor. When replacing a compressor, some condensors can be flushed, others must be replaced. GW

You're not passing along enough information to make sense. I will say that if they want to replace the whole system, it ought to be about $2000. It's not that unusual, but it may not be necessary either. You should find an independent A/C shop that does good work. You're not taking it to a muffler shop to get your a/c fixed are you? You shouldn't do stuff like that. Look in your yellow pages under Air conditioning - auto - repair.
