Sunfire GT 1999 - Code for Radio

Hey all,

I had to get some general work done on the car, brakes, battery, and new tires - as a result of this they (obviously) turned off the electrical in the car.

Apparently when the electrical is reconnected the radio "locks" and cannot be played until unlocked. Called the dealership, and they said I have to bring it in and have them do it - and of course there is a $50 fee for pressing a button sequence. You can probably imagine what I told them I thought of their $50 fee.

Just wondering if anyone out there has been in a similar situation and knows what this magical code is...free of charge.

Cheers, TV

You could to the alt.autos.gm group and ask Bobo for it, I have no idea how he gets the numbers but he does.

I think I have this information saved somewhere... DO NOT PAY THE 50 BUCKS. Find another dealership to do business with. There are dealerships out there that will unlock your radio free of charge.

Thanks guys.

There was no way I was going to drop $50 on a tightass dealer!

I called around and got the info I needed.

Thanks again for your help.

It's quite simple, actually. He probably has access to the phone number that dealerships can phone in to and retrieve the unlock codes. It's all automated and if you have a legit dealer code and the phone number, it takes a minute or two to get the unlock code (provided you have the radio codes). I have the procedure and numbers on a piece of paper around the house, but I can never find the stupid thing when folks in here are asking for unlock codes. I'll have to get a copy and tape it to the monitor.

Why is the dealer a tightass? You had your work done elsewhere, and whoever worked on your vehicle didn't have enough sense to use whatever tool was necessary to keep your radio memory alive. They should be paying for your code retrieval. Wait until the newer radios lose their unlock codes.....you have to teach the vehicles on board computer to recognize the radio "with a scan tool". Won't that be fun?

lol Thanks for the info. Never would have thought it to be that simple.

Actually, that is incredibly stupid of GM. Imagine they did that 20 years ago - wouldn't you be happy you sprung for that 8 track in your Corvette? Making the radio integral to the car is dumb.

No, it's not integral to car, but each radio has a signature that is "learned" to the vehicle's computer. If you swap the radio from one car to the next, the car's computer will "see" that it's not the radio that it "learned" to see. With a scan tool, you can go in and "relearn" the computer to the new radio.
