I was thinking about buying a 1990 C2 Targa with about 51,000 miles. I have read quite a bit of warnings about this vintage 911. Does anyone have any thoughts on this topic?

There are parts of the car that are not the most reliable. Don't let the low mileage effect the price, it will go wrong anyway. Later 964's have some of the obvious faults fixed (distributor venting etc.).

You will need to spend £1500 a year or more keeping it running. Be prepared for that, and find a porsche specialist rather than a dealer or you will be paying a lot more.

The tiptronic has a poor choice of ratios a manual might be better but the boxes are expensive to fix if abused.

Before purchase: inspect the brakes, check under the windscreen rubbers for rust, check for oil on the floor under the engine and under the right rear wheel arch is a rubber oil hose which must not be perished. Check there is an inflator for the space saver spare wheel. Check the battery with a multimeter, they are often sulphated and in need of replacement. (12.8v is good I think, and less then 12.5 is real bad)

None of these things should stop you buying as they probably will be present. But they will each need to be fixed as soon as you buy it and at great expense so make sure the price reflects this.

Buy one. Cheap. Have some fun. If it's costing too much sell it on.

Always carry some oil (NOT synthetic), some spare belts, some spare relays, a screwdriver, some spanners and some jump leads. Until you find whats going to go wrong or your car, you'll need them.

I had one, a 1991 C2, that was perfect in every way. the dealer changed out the dual mass flywheel for free and I was never disappointed in the car.

Just for reference, I had it for 12 years, bought it with 13,000 miles on it and sold it to buy a 996 three years ago.
