'97 Boxster cuts engine when idle

Hi, Just bought myself an amazingly beautiful Boxster, but he has kind of annoying problems , Firstly : Every now and then when downshifting gears the engine cuts out, it just dies, it happens always when shifting down from second to first : I engage the clutch, take him out of second gear and while still having a little speed (like when you saw a parking spot or in front of a red light) with the clutch still engaged as I want to put it in first gear the motor just dies on me and all the warning lights on the dash come on . Otherwise the engine turns smoothly, I kept an eye on the rpm meter and when idle it revs at about 800-900 rpm, but when I have the aforamentioned problem the idle goes down to about 600 rpm and sometimes the engine dies and sometimes it barely stays alive and goes back to a smooth 800 rpm idle . Any idea's ?? Secondly : When it's hot and I use my electric drivers side window it squeakes, it's really a friction problem, it's not motor related , it is as of there's a seal missing or misinstalled or worn . Any idea's ?? TIA !!

It could be that the throttle butterfly valve is gunked up. Try cleaning round the valve in the air intake with a litle petrol or carb cleaner and a small paint brush. Over time there gets a build up of gunge round the valve and it blocks the airflow when the throttle is closed. Hope this helps Richard F (UK)
