A followup to my previous message - what I owe to Porsche...

It occured to me after writing my diatribe complaining about the 911, that I should also write about the time my old 944 saved my life.... I really do owe my life to Porsche...

The year was 1993. I had just bought a used, 1988 94 for $12,000. It was my first Porsche, and I'd just graduated from college. I was taking a particularly attractive girl out on a first date; we were barreling down the freeway at probably 70 mph in the right lane. I was spending way too much time focusing on her, not enough time looking at the road. I notice, in front of me, that the right lane is blocked ahead, as cars are backed up at an exit. I have stopped cars maybe 50 yards in front of me. No time to stop. And, at that point in my life I wasn't a particularly good driver either - no idea how to do emergency maneuvers.

I wing it: I basically twist the steering wheel rapidly to the left. On any other car I would have been doing 360's on the highway. The 944 handled it without complaint. I find myself squarely in the lane immediately to the left of the stopped cars. The tires didn't even squeak. We went merrily on our way and the rest of the date was successful. I tried not to act too nervous.

(I wish I could say that that girl ended up being my wife - sadly not the case.)

Anyway, I do owe the 944 my life. What a phenomneal autombile. But, I still hate the 911. Such is life.
