Boxster '02 - help with decision

I have an opportunity to buy an immaculate (7,000 miles) '02 Boxster 2.7 liter 5-speed with the factory sport package including 17" wheels. My questions for those with long term experience with the car concerning power and delivery. I plan to drive it on w/e (not a commuter car and no racing) and was wondering if it has adequate power / flexible power band or do you need to wind it up to get any decent power. All indications are it was very well taken care of with all docs / service and still under full factory warranty til May '06; the car was not stored but was used on average of 3K / year. Any heads up on weak points, or things to look for. Believe I can get it for somewhere in the $33-35K range.

Any help is appreciated.

P.S. My previous Auto experience include BMW 5 series, SAAB 900, (Audi A6Q and VW Passat Wagon Current) all stick except the Audi.

Well, that's a good price; probably doesn't have many options at that price, however. It's probably similar to my wife's 2000 Boxster, which has only the sport package, heated seats and 17" wheels, along with metallic paint and some interior "exclusive" options.

Because of the variable valve timing, the low-end grunt is adequate for the light Boxsters. It's quicker and probably faster than my 330xi, mostly because it's got a 7K redline and is lighter. The 2000 year was the first year with the updated 2.7L engine; a '02 should be as bullet-proof as can be expected (oil leaks are the most common problem.)

Frankly, it's so much fun with the top down that the smaller motor (than the S) doesn't matter at all to us. It's certainly not as quick and fast as some cars, but the handling is delightful and the ride is quite a nice balance between sport and comfort.

Some features: Blue Metallic with light Gray leather, A/C, Cruise, Power Steering / Windows / Locks / Mirrors, Keyless, Driver-Passenger-side Bags, Leather Steering and Gear shifter, CD Player with 6 speakers w/ separate Tweeters (probably most of these are standard).

AFAIK, only the metallic paint is an extra-cost option (among those you mention.) FWIW, base price on our 2000 (we have the sticker) was $41,430, metallic paint

2 was $805, sport package $2110, 17" wheels $1215, heated seats $400. We bought ours used 1.5yr ago for $30k with 38K miles; probably a real good deal - certainly the best price for a 2000 that I saw.

I have an '01 non S model and really enjoy it. Lazuli (the car's name - comes from the color Lapis Blue) provides my wife and me with lots of pleasure. If I were to do it again (and we will) I would get the "S" model but that is because I want to auto-x and track it. The biggest problem with the car is the real main seal on some engines leaks oil and needs to be replaced. I know that I have had mine replaced once and hopefully it won't happen again.

We drive ours mostly on the weekend and on trips with other car crazy friends. Last year we put about 10k on Lazuli and I wish I would have doubled that. They are fun cars. If you can afford it and the price is right get one.

The '02 Boxster got variable cam phasing. This increased low end torque like crazy. I think you will be quite please with the cars performance.

AFAIK, all Boxsters ever made have variable valve timing. Certainly our '00 has it.

Hi Fred,

I bought my Boxster a half year ago here in Germany and I must say:

I have fallen in love for the second time. Once into my girlfriend, second time in the Boxster. A dream car!

In the future I`ll never drive other cars then porsche.

My decision: BUY IT! :-)

A boxster fan
