I'm very interested in buying a 996, and was recently told that leaking engine seals were common, even on low-mileage models. First, let me advertise my ignorance--the main seal connects the engine to the transmission, right? Second, how common is this problem? Appreciate your guidance.
The 2002 and later 996 got a 3.6 liter engine that only shared about
20% commonality with the 3.4 liter of the earlier cars. There were instances of rear main seals leaking on the 2002 cars and Porsche put out a redesigned seal that fixed the problem. I don't think any year 996 has been plagued with leaking seals as a "common" problem but my car is a 2002 and I'm most knowledgable with that year. Porsche is pretty good about coming up with fixes for things that are identified as problems.
The 996 is a great car - try for a 2002 or later model as Porsche is always improving the breed and the latest car you can afford is almost always the way to go.
