Need help on convertible!

Hi all. My 97 911 convertible is not working. The switch stop working. I check the fuse, make sure the parking brake is set and light is on but still no response from pressing the switch. Any idea? I am not sure how to check the relay to know if it is good or not. However, the dealer give me 3 possible cause:

  1. Motor and they want 2500 for it.
  2. Switch or module which will cost around 0. Is the price about right? Thanks.

OK Tim, we have to break this down a bit. Now, I am going to base this on the 944 Cab which will definitely be different, but basically the systems operate the same.

First...I assume a there must be a few things that must be in place in order for the roof to operate. You seem to have tried that.

First we eliminate the motor: Get to the motor and pull the wire on the side that gets power. Clamp the positive side of the meter to that wire. Touch the other side to ground. Now have someone operate the switch. If you get a voltage reading your motor may be shot. If you get nothing...the motor is probably fine.

Next check would be the limit switches or roof position switches. In the case of the 944 there are a few. Two are in the windscreen frame that sense that the roof has been pushed away. Two that sense that the windows are clear and the last tell the system if the roof is all the way down.

My guess is that if you have those windscreen switches you may have gotten water into them.

I would eliminate the motor first.

I do not know where the relay block is in that model; however, the easy way to check it is to find where they're located, and swap the power roof relay for one of the same type that's used for another circuit. That should tell you immediately if the relay is bad...and save you a lot of time chasing other potential problems.

Good luck....

Pull the switch out and check if it's getting +12V when it should. If not it's the relay. If yes then check if the motor gets +12V when switch is on. If yes it's the motor. If not it's the various roof position switches. BTW there is a Porsche manual specially for the convertible roof (well, certainly for 968 / 944S2) someone may have copy. Regards, Martin
