Porsche parts --- What do you think about it?

Hi all!!

I'm a student from Germany and actually I write my diploma thesis. I have to do this to get my degree as a graduate engineer.

My question to all:

One of my themes is, to check the prices of parts...!

Please tell me all you think about the prices of Porsche-parts, spare parts and so on...

Are they too cheap, too expensive, good quality, bad quality and so on...

Would you go to an independent workshop and what are the reasons??

or

Do you allways do maintenance at your porsche by yourself, or do you allways bring your porsche to an official porsche workshop/dealership.....??What are the reasons...??

Thank you very, very much in advance for you help!!!

See ya

Matthias

Hey Hans-

As a 30 year Porsche owner (7 various 911s') and the current owner of a "98

993 C2S here's my take on your questions. Parts; Always use OEM, unless you know something is better. Shop around, many sources for information ask for discounts, use the internet, check Porsche specific publications ( "excellence" , "Porsche World" magazines...ect). Never use a Porsche dealership the prices are inflated 50%
  • and 9 out of ten times the part won't be in stock. Use a local Porsche specific shop. We have "Zimms" here, very good, he's an independent.

Maintenance; Basically the same as above. Porsche dealerships STINK, the service departments will in most cases show no respect for your vehicle and they will try and FU*K you out of every nickel they think they can.....I can't emphasize this enough. Get your self a set of factory manuals you can do most of the work yourself, take your time, you'll know the work is right , the cars are very finely engineered. What you can't do, check with your local PCA for an independent shop.

use the search functionat the top. These guys love Porsches!!!! Just remember NEVER USE THE DEALERSHIP (unless it's absolutely necessary) . Just my $0.02

Good Luck,

Steve

When buying parts for my 1989 911, I generally go through many of the discount vendors such as Vertex, Pelican Parts, etc. Their prices are usually much better than buying from the dealer.

Genuine Porsche parts are all that I use( i.e. Bosch)

Quality is generally very good

I do go to an independent workshop. The mechanic is a Porsche certified technician and worked for the dealer for 15 years before opening his own shop. He charges his cost on parts and his labor rates are half of those at the dealer. He also stamps my service book. He is well known and respected amongst all 914, 924,944, 928, and pre 1995 911 owners.

I generally do all electrical work myself, and some mechanical work. I did take it to my mechanic to be lowered, and run the standard battery of tests once per year.

I must also add that my car gives me nearly no problems at all.
