Roadster Choice

Looking for a nice open two seat roadster. I like the Boxster and the Toyota MR2. How do they compare? Looks kinda like Porsche copied the MR2, but does the Boxster perform as well as the MR2? I'm going to go drive both this weekend, but if there are any thoughts or experiences on the two i'd like to hear them. I bet they are both good cars.

They are very different cars. The Boxster is *not* a copy; the only comparison is that they are both mid-engined. The Boxster is far quicker, faster, has a much higher set of features, is larger with much more interior and storage space. It also costs twice as much. ;->

FYI, the Honda S2000 will trash the MR2 Spyder for only a few grand more.

and ask on the forum. There have been a few members who have had both (as well as MX-5's, S-2000's, MG-F's etc).

Interesting pairing! I always thought the Boxster came out before the latest MR2 and hence thought of the MR2 as a baby boxster. This is reflected in the price I think UK retail is about £20k for the MR2 and £35k for the Porsche I would think a better comparsion would be the MR2 to the MGF or the MX5 and the Boxster to the Z4 and the Honda S2000.

Sounds like a fun decision either way.

You've simply got to be kidding.

I had hoped for more from Toyota, and this iteration of the MR-2 was/is pretty disappointing for me...both in styling and performance. The Boxster may be too expensive, but the versions since 2000...regular and "S" are very nice, good performing cars, far superior in virtually every category.

If you've got the $$, get a Boxster...and a well kept "preowned" one would certainly be a good choice.

Don't even think about the MR2, forget the boxster (unless you are hairdresser), get a proper Porsche: 968 Cab ! It at least as good as Boxster, but lot more usable and will cost you half the price. Regards, Martin

968 Cab (replaced 944S2 Cab)

If $ an issue - Miata --- if not the the BMW Z4 --- or the new Nissan 350ZX Convertible.

968? at the youngest the car is going to be around 10 years old, with a 4 banger under the hood no less. If you want a proper Porsche get a 911 convertible, 993s can be had for less than the price of a new boxster, and soon 996s (at least the 1999s) will be around the same price.

Feh. 930.

Nah. They forgot to put in the engine, so they stuck it in the boot..., and it will cost you more then two times the price of low mileage 968 Cab, and it will loose most of it in couple of years.

968 Cab's might even go up in price ! Regards, Martin

Just what is a 968? It's hard to keep track of all the numbers. Is there a glossary somewhere on-line?

The 968 was the last variant of Porsche's 4-cylinder hatchback models, similar to the 924 and 944. The Boxster is technically the 986, which sounds similar but isn't used much. Emanuel

you get at least twice as much car

most if it? as in what, 70%, 80%? whats your crystal ball say?

dream on, those hopped up 944s will be selling for Pennies on the dollar.

well, 930 roadster would be cool, but not so easy to find, especially since they havent made them in 15 years.

They already are, so he is right, now they might go up in price.

Besides, why wouldn't you want to "hop up" a 944. I would think that would be good. Unless you are one of those 911 or nothing types.

not at all, i just am baffled by his concept of the 968 cab as the ultimate Porsche roadster.

Wow, I checked out 968.net and I never have seen those Porsches before! They sort of look a cross between a 944 and a 928. Were they a particularly short run?

I knew about the 986 number, I checked out 986faq.com before I bought my '02 Boxster.
