Prius (et al) recall...

Back in November I read in a newspaper that Toyota had an upcoming recall of several vehicle models, including the Prius, for those built between 1-99 and 8-04. This was for defective parts including problem brake lights and defective fuel pumps.

I haven't heard anything more about this. Does anyone have an update?

The brake light switch recall only affects a small range of VINs, and I don't think there is a fuel pump recall for the Prius. You can always call 1-800-TOYOTA and ask. Have your VIN ready.

Received the recall notice in the mail a few weeks ago involving the brake switch. Silicon corrosion seems to be the issue. Anyway, just make sure your local dealership has your updated information if you move, and make sure you fill out the change of ownership card if you sell it third party.

I got the SSC 40L Brake Light recall letter in the mail the other day. I posted the text of the letter here:

Yesterday I took our Prius in for 10,000 mile L.O.F. and had the service manager look up the recalls relative to our VIN. Our Prius is clean but I'd suggest that everyone owning one that is an '04 or older, make appropriate inquiries.

I just had my 2004 in for the Brake Light switch recall. There is also a Navigation System DVD recall where Toyota will swap your Navigation DVD for and updated one. I had this done too and have noticed that my Nav System seems to have lost significant positional accuracy. My street was not on the old DVD but my home was consistantly in the same place. With the update when I arrive home the bug on the map is usually about a block away from my real address, and depending on the direction I arrive from, it could be in either direction. My home position marker, retained from the previous release, still has my house in the middle of a field even though my street is now included on the map. The navigation recall appears to be a step backward.

I am aware of others that do not think the 4.2 version of the Navigation al DVD that Toyota dealers are using to replace the older versions is worthwhile. I plan to update the DVD in November/December 2005 when a newer version will be available. I currently have version 3.3 in the

2004 Prius.

I forgot to add that I believe if you upgrade now, a future upgrade will be $250, so I will wait.

BTW, you can look up recall and TSB information at

Currently there is only the brake light recall for the 2004 Prius, which also applies to the 2004 Lexus RX330.

What is L.O.F and VIN?

VIN is Vehicle Identification Number. I don't know what L.O.F means, but it's the oil change and other services required at 10,000 miles.

L.O.F. = Lube Oil Filter KK

One should not ask for an "LOF" on an '04 or '05 Prius; there is nothing to lubricate on the Prius chassis, but some dealers will happily charge you anyway for that part of their standard service package. Explicitly order only those things shown in the Prius maintenance guide and pay for no more than those.
