'98 420 SLDi Brakes banging

Don't know if anyone else has experienced this or not...

Sometimes when braking gently I feel the pedal vibrating and hear a loud banging. It feels a bit like the ABS releasing and reapplying the bakes, but in slow motion. This only happens at low speed and gentle braking. If I brake hard, this never happens. There are no ABS or brake warning lights when the banging happens and the car always brakes in a straight line, never pulling to either side.

It's more annoying than anything else and I assume the banging can be heard by pedestrians as a few times people have looked around for the source of the noise.

I would be more concerned if this happened all the time, but it only happens I guess about 60-70% of the time under gentle braking.

The brake pads & shoes, discs & drums all look good with no signs of damage.

Anyone any ideas what it might be?

Cheers, Lee

Have you looked at the suspension? Could worn bushes be a cause?

If you tap the brake pedal does it stop (did on my 45)?

Its due to a broken reluctor (toothed) ring on one of the front cv joints. It only happens at low speed because the crack reduces the signal picked up by the abs sensor more at low speed.

On my 45, the only cure was a new cv joint as the ring isn't available separately.
