DogWatch & 1.8 K series

Well what a pasting it got tonight.

Surely there must be something Rover can do - or is there? Or do they think it's cheaper to just keep replacing 1.8 engines that blow till they're out of warranty, then make the customer pay instead? It's good that Ford will honour the failed head gaskets in Freelanders but shouldn't Rover do the same? Is the 1.8 engine just bored out too far, or can a redesign of the head gasket seals do the trick?

I am thinking of buying a 2 Litre Rover 75, has this got a K-Series engine, and am i looking at the same problem?

If you're buying a 75 diesel, then no. It has a BMW engine. I've just bought one - 5 speed auto CDTi. This has 131 BHP instead of ( about) 115 bhp. As has been mentioned before, Rover dealers can reprogramme the "original " engine through software to the engine management system to increase power to the 131 bhp spec. BUT they charge nearly £500 for this.

All other 75s have variants of the K series. I just wondered if it's the 1.8 litre 4 cylinder that has the problems, as the 1.1, 1.4 and 1.6 variants used to be pretty reliable?

BTW, I do like my new car!

I can only comment on the two KV6 2.5 ltr engines I have had in the past four years in a 75 and now in a ZT-T I have had not one single problem with either engine.

The early KV6 had a few issues (the one used in the very last 800s) but there are no known isues with the 75 era KV6, either the 2.0 or 2.5. To be fair the 1.4 and 1.6 K series is fine but the 1.8 is a little dodgy at times. The engine wasnt never meant to be that big, it was designed as a

My '97 K series 1.6 is fine. 75k now (bought at 40k) - no probs (touch wood)!

Check oil / coolant every week. replace oil every 6k. Replace coolant every

2 years / 24k.

Should be ok if looked after.

Yup.

They blow gaskets when they overheat. Keep an eagle eye on the cooling system and temperature guage, and you won't have a problem.
