1993 Aero 9000 Gremlins - help!

Salutations:

Well I have gremlins that I can't pin down.

1993 - SAAB 9000 2.3 Aero 5 speed.

Prev Owner - Mods: Switched TCS Replaced TCS controller Head Gasket Cut out Karmon Audio Head replace with Sony Xwave

Gremlins:

When I picked it up, all seemed fine for a fairly long trip back home.

Then a couple of days later - SRS light kicks up.. Gave up fixing it under recall, pulled bulb - thank you SAAB/Isuzu Halifax - so nice too know my previous *decade* of business with you was worth so much of your attention when I needed some help with a model I didn't buy with you because you don't sell them anymore - no I don't want a 9^5... Grrrrr..

It has been kicking check engine codes 5 and 7 irregularly for a while and kicked into limp mode a couple of times - so I replaced the DI. Hoses are starting to harden up - so have replaced one or two and gave it a new OS sensor.

Voltage seemed irregular - had the alternator serviced by a good shop and it's now running strong and even.

Still kicking code 7, which seems to go away on it's own every so often if I don't get around to pulling the battery. Mostly after a hesitant starting situation. Hard start - short while later the check engine light goes out. However, this seemed linked to limp home and DI replacement.

My dash lights seem to work almost opposite. They seem to brighten up when I cover the dash sensor - they seem to get darker when I remove my finger.

The ACC unit did something odd recently. I seem to suddenly start running full tilt - then turned itself off while in heater function. I had reset it and it seemed to go away.

The dash voltage seems to read between 10-13.9 (cold start in the morning)

- but the voltage at the battery is dead on at 14.1-2 as it should be.

I am not seeing the boost figures I should in the dash and it ran about

170hp on the dyno at the wheels. This is supposed to be about 50hp light for the aero, my turbo gauge runs into the broken yellow and no further.

Finally - no cruise control. This can be more expensive around here than you can imagine having now picked up my first speeding ticket in about 15 years (140kph in a passing lane in a 110kph zone).

I'm about to start the work sheet for the spring as I expected to be fixing some bugs with the system. Would appreciate any leads on any of the above for this model and year you might have.

Cheers.

Well, I'll give it a stab.

YIKES!!! TSC (Yecchh!)

WHY? I'd love to have the OE harmon head unit in my CS

SRS, probably the hairspring behind the steering wheel, but you really need to have the 1) code read out then 2) the system reset AFTER you replace the defective component. This is integral to the safety of the car. It'll be spendy, but could be worth it. This car has belt pretensioners as part of its safety systems. If these can set an SRS light when they have an error, I'd be concerned. I do not know if they can or not.

Just assume I have no idea what 'code 5 and 7' are...

Dunno, here. The trip computer/clock has this sensor in it. I replaced mine with a rad shak photo transistor to fix an 'always bright' light.

never sen this, either.

low base boost? The Trionic cars should be at 6psi base boost to give the trionic enough boost to 'work with'. Run premium, do a few full throttle accels to 'train' the trionic, verify base boost and report back.

the '93 has a vacuum pump system like in an earlier 9k or c900. if the basic bits (pump, vacuum lines and pedal switches) all check out, I would suspect the cruise ECU. IIRC, it is the same as a C900 '92-'93 and I have personally had 3 of 4 either dead or intermittent. Intermittent ones can sometimes be fixed by stripping the red gunk off the board , removing all solder and resoldering all components.

good luck,

Thx brother Keith - will follow up on the leads provided. As to Karmon - I know, and now I'm wondering if there are any harness issues left over from the work which might explain some of the other gremlins noted.

Cheers - any other takers?
