2001 9-3 Automatic Front Brake Pads need replacement at 20,000 miles

This is our third SAAB (first automatic), have NEVER needed brake replacement through 50,000 on first 2. Dealer (asking $600 for replacement) insists this is "low range of normal" for this wear item. We drive mostly city, not hard drivers or brakers at all.

Does this seem reasonable, or is there a concern that there is a problem causing premature wear?

TIA for your responses.

It's not unheard of, but it's the $600 that most worries me - pads are around £30 (US$45), and they take all of 30 minutes to replace. That makes for an hourly rate of $550 for half an hour, or $1100 per hour.

Now I realise prices are different in the US, but if one can really make $1100 per hour replacing brake pads, I'm on my way over - can I stay with one of you guys while I find a place to live?

I had to replace my front pads at 30,000. You may just be a bit harder on you brakes! The dealer will always replace the rotors with the pads, hence the $600 bill. According to my independent Saab shop (Saabtech, Chicago), you should get at least two sets (and usually three) of pads per rotor replacement. I just had the front and back pads replaced at 60,000 miles. The rotors required a bit of machining, but should be good till 90,000 miles.

Take your car elsewhere for a 2nd opinion.

IME more like 4-5, but yes, there's absolutely no reason whatsoever to replace rotors at the same time as pads - except to make more profit.
