'87 900 central locking

Where can I find the central door locking relay or control unit in a '87

900? I can find it in the schematic diagram but not in the car. I want to replace it with an R/C one.

The Haynes manual simply says in the wiring diagram for '85-'90 900 about component locations; "central locking control unit behind instrument panel right side." Ron F.

Drop the knee bolster/lower dash padding (1), it is right behind the padding about the plastic air ducting.

(1)That is a lesson in itself.

I have bought a used Haynes 900 manual on Ebay, it's on its way from the US to me. Meanwhile, can you give me some hints?

Another thing; today I checked the engine and gearbox oil and while I was looking around under the hood/bonnet I noticed a single 30 A fuse in the wiring near the power steering reservoir. It was burned out, but there is nothing in the car that does not work (that I have noticed...) In what circuit is this fuse?

2 10mm bolts in the gap between the inner and out wheel arch/fender. Directly below the windscreen, may be covered in underseal/mastic. A decent extension and UJ/Flexijoint should do the job.

One 13mm (I think) bolt behind the ashtray (if you have a centre console it also forms a threaded boss that the top part of the console bolts down to. Pull out your ashtray and see if you can see a 10mm bolt.

Remove the bolt and you should be able to see a bigger bolt with a thread cut through the middle of it. Remove the centre console or ashtray surround (if you have the full carpetted console that pulls out after the plastic parts are out. Once the 3 bolts (2 outside, 1 inside) are out the lower padding pulls forward and down. BTW you will need to remove the steering wheel too and the plastic surround on the column, but that is pretty self explanitery.

Can't help with that Sorry.

I've removed the lower dash on my c900 before, and I did not need to remove the steering wheel to do it. The wheel wasn't in the way at all. I only removed the plastic underneath the wheel which covers the stalk switches.

My car has the steering wheel on the left side (I am in NL), the relay is on the right side, your remark applies to RHD cars?

The bolts you can't find are visible when you open the doors. They hold the ends of the bolster in place, two on each side. I don't have my 900 any more so I can't tell you what connector they are, but that's where they're hidden.

As far as I'm aware, the relay is still on the left side. In that case below the knee shroud below the steering wheel surround.

I had to remove the wheel to get at just about the only 2 torq screws in the whole car. the spokes of the wheel were just covering them.

Now I'm confused... Is the relay on the right side or the left side (behind the knee padding)?

Left side, just across from where all the wiring comes through from the outside of the car, at roughly steering wheel position.

There is a lot of wiring and tubing under there on a RHD car. I can only imagine that it is complete nightmare on an LHD, even without the brake and clutch crossover.
