900 heater control lights

Going down the list of things to fix on the newly acquired '88 900s, it seems a couple of the bulbs that illuminate the heater controls and such are burned out. How do you get to the bulbs to change them?

I replaced the bulb in the hazard light switch today and that was no easy task, I had to pull the switch apart, couldn't get the button off so I went in from the back and pried the gap large enough to squeeze the bulb out and jam a new one down in there then soldered the wires together, obviously these were not made to have bulbs replaced. I also replaced bulbs in the power window switches with green LED's, just had to cram the appropriate resistor in the small space available within the switch and remove the green plastic filters.

You have to remove the dash to get to them. You're gonna *love* this.

The below reference to left/right assumes a UK car (with the steering wheel on the right hand side). If not UK car, change right for left.

With your right hand, feel under the bottom edge of the dash just to the right of the steering column. There's a screw head. This is one of 4 screws which run bottom-top holding the dash in. Two of those screws, to the left of the steering column are hidden under the top of the centre console. So that will need to come out first.

I'm not going to go through the whole procedure (it's all in the Haynes anyway), but a couple of points:

  1. The long screws are all different lengths. Note which one came out of which hole (they are also marked with grooves to indicate their position).
  2. When removing them/reinstalling them, be careful not to break one of the plastic tabs which they go through.
  3. When you pull the dash forward, the heater control rod will become detached. You will need to reattach this in order to regain control over your heater.

Lovely... I think perhaps I'll wait until we locate a nicer dash for the car.

It's not that bad - but first time you do it it can seem like a bit of a challenge. I reckon I can change those bulbs in ~20 mins.
